Free Facebook Marketing Strategies

Free Facebook Marketing Strategies

Facebook can be used for more than connecting with people you went to high school with. With over 500 million active users, there are a lot of potential customers to be had. Of course, the only way that you and your customers will find each other are with the right marketing strategies. Here are some of the best free Facebook marketing strategies that have been proven to be effective.

#1- Your Facebook Profile
Your profile is the first thing that people see when they find you. Even before they go to your profile, customers are trying to decide if they want to visit you. The most important thing to have is a good picture. Don’t just put up a logo, or worse, leave the photo blank! When looking for new people to connect with, having a happy, smiling face showing will be a much better asset. You don’t have to have Hollywood star looks either. People just want to know that a real person is behind the screen, and not simply a spambot who only want to sell them something. It’s fine to use Facebook to sell, but you have to earn that right. Spend time, not just on your picture, but in all the other profile areas to flesh out your page and show that you are a living, breathing person who is worth getting to know.

#2- Groups
There are tons and tons of Facebook groups that are perfect for viral marketing. You can find groups that coincide with your market to join, or you can start your own group. The point here is targeting your market. Joining 50 petition groups to prove chunky peanut butter is better than creamy will not get you anywhere, unless you’re marketing peanut butter. Become active in the groups and add other people in the group to your friends list. If you offer good content and position yourself as a leader in your group, more people will seek you out and be willing to listen to you.

#3- Fan Pages
Similar to groups is a personal fan page. A fan page is basically like a second personal page. The difference is that you want to use your personal page mostly to connect on a personal level, one-to-one with your friends, and a fan page is better suited to your business opportunities. Another difference is that Facebook limits you to 5000 friends on your personal page. Your fan page can have as many people like it as you can get. This is the place to put out your links to your videos, articles, whatever other marketing methods you may be using. You can also put up a lead capture page on your fan page so your fans never have to leave Facebook to opt in to your list.

#4- Events
Whenever you have an upcoming event like a product launch, webinar, or conference, you can set up an event. It creates a new page that handles just like a group or fan page with wall posts, discussions, and photo pages, but with the added benefit that you can invite all of your friends to the event. They can RSVP and indicate whether they will be there or not, and you can get an idea of the excitement being generated.

#5- Messages
Messages are great for starting a direct conversation with anyone. They can be sent to anyone on Facebook, regardless of whether they are on your friends list or not. It does require some restraint though, as Facebook may decide that you are a spammer and refuse to accept your messages if you send to too many people who are not on your list. The best way to use it is to start a conversation with the people already on your list. Odds are you don’t personally know everyone you are friends with. Use the message feature to learn about them! Send a message asking about the other person and get them talking about themselves. People love to talk about themselves, and if you give them a chance they will open up to you and be more receptive to your offer.

These are some of the most popular free Facebook marketing strategies available. You can do paid advertising on Facebook, but why would you bother when there are so many methods that don’t cost anything? Using the free methods also makes you more involved in your community, which is the whole point of social media. So take these strategies and get out there!

Question by Leanne: How much is appropriate to charge for maintenance/update of a website?
I currently maintain and update a local companies website as an employee on the side of my actual job description, but am hoping to continue this maintenance on a freelance basis as I will be employed elsewhere. On average I spend 6+ hrs/week. How much should I be charging hourly or monthly for this service? I am also creating eblasts from scratch every other week (sometimes more frequently) as well as contributing graphics, photos, copy and marketing strategies along with updating facebook/twitter pages about twice a week. Keep in mind that I don’t have experience professionally as a website developer.

Facebook Advertising for New Marketers

Facebook Advertising
by Sorosh

Facebook Advertising for New Marketers

But there’s one other strategy you might want to consider – one that at first may seem premature for a new blog or website. And that is advertising on Facebook. It’s not for everyone, of course – but if you fit a certain profile, it can be the fastest way to turn your site or blog into an authority site and increase it’s page rank.

You could invest in a pay-per-click (PPC) campaign – if you’re going to pay for advertising at all. But anyone who has tried to find a good keyword with competition that isn’t overwhelming, then register a dot com domain for it, knows all too well that finding that keyword unregistered is akin to winning millions on the lottery.

The Hazards of Keyword Selection

And if you pick a keyword with heavy competition, no one’s going to notice you.  Especially if you’re just using that long-tail for SEO purposes, rather than purchasing PPC. (And this is especially true for internet marketers – one group fully aware of and savvy to keyword SEO – unlike, for example, the majority of people in, say, knitting forums, where the main interest is knitting; not marketing.)

If you do have a clear niche, however, and a strong demographic that is narrow and precise, your fastest road to creating a profitable presence could be to invest in a Facebook ad. You can purchase one inexpensively, run it for a set amount of time – and have your site spread via the best route of all: The buzz created among your social network friends (all of whom are sitting there, right in your specific niche demographic).

Remember, this is an experiment. Set your daily allotment low, and track it. (Facebook does allow you to do that.)

Maximizing Your Ad

Make the most of Facebook ads’ graphics ability, and add an appealing photo or image (just look at those Facebook ads down the right-hand side of your profile page, to see examples of visually strong ads).

And Facebook’s ability to target by city, state and country is one of its best ad features. If your website or blog is dependent on location (i.e. “Niagara Falls Orchard Photography”) and you’ve also created a Fan Page on Facebook, you may find you’ve got it made.

One caution, however: Do make sure that you actually do use strong, specific keywords for your niche in your ad headline and body text.  Keep the focus narrow to that one single, specific group.

Remember that Facebook’s participants are predominantly (but not exclusively limited to) the female 18-34 range. If you were running a site that wanted to sell to a strong male demographic in a different age range, you’d need to make sure there was a good sprinkling of active Facebook groups and fan pages in that field visibly populated with males, before you went ahead with your ad.

Remember – keep your daily costs low, your target specific – and good luck with your Facebook advertising!

Facebook advertising is a cheap way to advertise your website or a product that you might have that you want to promote. I have been using it for about a month or so playing around with it now and again. I have gotten very discouraged at times and have spent some money and not made any. Actually I haven’t made much at all compared to what I have spent in advertising. It is costing me about 13 cents a click to get visitors to my site in large numbers.

The pain however of having to pay for visitors to your site can be lightened in a couple of ways. One of them being ad credits through signing up with a hosting service that offers credits when you sign up for a hosting account. The hosting account that I chose was Go Daddy. They are very affordable and reliable. They also give you a 50 dollar ad credit with Facebook, Google AdWords, and Microsoft advertising. I got a cheaper CPC through Facebook. Which is why I like using them. As far as the ads converting, well that is up to you. If you write a good ad and target it right, it will convert nicely for you.

Now another way that I got some ad credits was the visa business network. This ad coupon was 100 dollars. All you do for this is search for the visa business network in Facebook and apply for the app. This is free and they send you the coupon code through your e-mail. I actually had a little trouble with this, but I contacted Facebook and told them what was going on and in about 48 hrs I had the 100 dollar ad credited added to my account.

This is really good because all you do is set your daily budget up to not exceed your ad credits and kind of play around with the ads. This will let you know what works and what want work. This will enable you to make effective campaigns so that when you do have to start paying for your ads you can get a net profit instead of a net loss.

I am using these ads to primarily promote my website to get it some exposure in the hopes that it will become viral and spread like wildfire. The site that I am trying to promote is Dumb kids on Facebook make 9,833.57!

If you were to say ‘see us on facebook’ it is ethically OK. People know what social networking is, so feel free to use that term. Or ‘connecting people who love horses’
