Monitoring Search Engine Positions

Monitoring Search Engine Positions

Each search engine uses a formula to  estimate website rankings. When a search engine changes this formula in any way, it may raise or lower your ranking significantly.

That is why you need to check your positions at regualar intervals in order to catch when a search engine changes formulas and what result it has on your positions.

Your competitor’s position may suddenly rise, lowering your position. Or their position may drop, pushing your position higher.Expect position to changes each month due to the constant changes that are taking place in your competitor’s position, and be prepared toa djust your marketing strategy to make up for decreased rankings.Monitoring these fluctuations will also give you important information about how to improve your website to increase your
position in search results.

You may need to regconize which are the most popular search engines in order for your monitoring efforts to be productive. Right now, there are ten popular search engines
that direct most of Internet traffic to your sites. However, do note that these top ten may change from month to month.

Another factor to monitor cautiously is a sudden drop of your positions in all search engines. This is not the same as monthly fluctuations – this is a code red warning sign! It could mean a number of different issues.

Some search engines depends on the results from other search engines, and it is important for you to know which engine these are and keep track of all the engines they influence. There is
a huge problem here whereby search engines will sometimes change affiliations, creating a major shift in  the geography of the Internet.

Finally, do pay close attention to your keywords. Keywords are the foundation stepping stone of the entire search engine system, and they demand individual analysis, in your monitoring efforts. If you have found that a number of your positions have collapsed, it may mean that the competition for that particular keyword or phrase has recently shot up into outer space. Or a page of your website has become hidden or inaccessible to search engine spiders.
Either of the case, you must act fast and effectively to regain lost ground.

Part 2 of 3 Whoa…it’s sure been busy here around The New PPC office. Last week we did a presentation at Mike Filsaime’s event in Long Island. It was really weird standing in front of a group of the biggest marketers in the online marketing world and showing them what we’ve been up to with our PPC stuff… The weirdest part was seeing the looks of amazement on their faces. We actually stunned the “gurus”. And we decided that this information should NOT be limited to the people who attended that 00 per ticket workshop…so we put all the information into a new video for you. The video starts with a few basics (hey, even some top marketers are just NOW getting started with PPC)… and then we quickly show you the thing that got everybody in Long Island all lathered up… “The Perpetual Keyword Money Machine” Yeah, we know, it sounds a little “hypey”. But check out the video and see for yourself that it’s a great description. Nothing for sale in the video, and you don’t have to give us your email address: Here’s a sample of what’s in this video… – Broad Matching. How to avoid losing money by choosing the wrong keywords. – Phrase Matching… and the secret of grouping words together to lower your PPC costs and raise your ROI immediately. – Exact Matching. It is what it says… how to show people exactly what they’re looking for. And nothing else. – Negative Keywords and how you can “screen” your traffic. Only pay for profitable clicks, not for the money-suckers

Monitoring Your Search Engine Visibility

Monitoring Your Search Engine Visibility

If you are maintaining a website, you know how valuable SEO tools can be to your efforts to stay visible with search engines.  Visibility is the key to keeping your rankings high.  High page rankings ensure that your website gets the most exposure.  There are a few tools that are specifically helpful.

Part of the tools that are offered by the Google Monitor program includes ways to measure statistical information about your website, like visitor numbers and crawl times.  The Google Spider is the automated bot program that crawls the Internet and indexes websites.  Indexing is basically just the storage of the information that a search engine gathers when it crawls.  It is a good idea to know when your site was last indexed by the search engines.  It can tell you if your site pages were cached (stored) since the last time you updated.

Many search engines provide you with the ability to check the statistics that are attached to your website by each individual search engine.  This ability is provided by a site tool that is usually accessible through the search box of the search engine.

Using the search engine’s site tool provides you with a broad range of data.  You have the ability of learning what other websites have mentioned your website, which can include your URL in a clickable link or a simple text mentioning.  It also can provide you with a list of sites that have backlinked any of your pages.

Yahoo’s site and info tools are accessed through their Meta Words search help page.  I know this may be confusing, but it is the same concept as Google’s site and info tools.  In addition to the same information that you get from Google, you can also find out exactly which of your web pages has been indexed by Yahoo.

MSN’s search engine works in the same way as the other two search engines mentioned previously.  MSN also offers a broad range of tools for webmasters to use to help keep track of the statistics of their websites.  Again, you are provided with information about your site that is related to how well it is doing.

Checking your page rankings is also important.  Regularly checking your rankings help you determine if your efforts thus far are working.  The easiest way to check your rankings is to visit each search engine’s main search page.  Enter your chosen keywords in the search box.  Locate your website among the listings.  Where your website is located is your ranking.  If you find your website listed on page three as the second one down, your ranking is 22.  Most search engines provide ten listings per page.  Generally, you do not count the listings that are in the Sponsored Results box.  These websites have paid to be listed in those boxes – they have paid for their top rankings.

It is very easy to use the simple things that are provided by the search engines to help you increase your website’s visibility.  The webmaster tools will prove to be a valuable addition to your toolbox.  It is important to thoroughly monitor your website.  You need to pay close attention to what is going on with your website.
