Whatever you read elsewhere be assured SEO is not an overnight fix to increase your traffic, ignore the ridiculous claims that 1,000 people will rush to your site with just a few clicks. The reality is that search engines work in their time not ours and patience is required to allow the search engines to put your site into the database, and once there patience is required when the search engines appear to downgrade your previous high ranking.
Why does this happen? In a word algorithms, these are programs that engines use to determine which sites appear when queries are entered and some engines change theirs weekly. Accept this and concentrate on developing good SEO practice.
Content is King. If I had a pound, dollar or euro for every time I had heard or read that I would be very rich, but do you know this short statement is a little gold nugget, always has been and I truly believe always will.

Question by Elene Pidgeon: Submitting site in directories-regular or reciprocal links?
Submitting my site in free web directories. Most of the sites are giving me two options:
1.Regular links (no follow-it is written in many sites)
2.Reciprocal links
These are options for the free web directory sites to submit your site.
Note: These are high PR sites.
I do not want to increase my PR, my target is to increase my traffic, I am doing SEO to get on the first page of search engines.
Please advice with good referrals , which type of links should I choose and why?
which type of links are good for which purposes?
Best answer:
Answer by dvduval Too many reciprocal links can lead to a penalty with search engines, so be careful there. No follow links don’t pass pagerank juice. My advice would be to locate a nice list where neither of the options exists. I personally like info.vilesilencer.com but there are other such lists as well.

Answer by Maxence Rex There are many creative ways to increase traffic to your website. Some will cost you money, and some won’t. Below you’ll find many legitimate ways (ranging from free to costly) to boost the number of visitors to your website. But if you don’t have so much as a cent to spare, read How to Increase Website Traffic for Free.
Steps:
1. Offer free, original, and quality content on your site. This is the most effective means for increasing traffic to a website; offering people something that they cannot obtain elsewhere, or at least, not to the level of quality that you are offering it. Ways in which to ensure that your content is of higher quality than competitors or is unique include:
* Creating content that is helpful and useful. Simply cobbling together information from another website will not generate traffic. You need to offer visitors the information they need to achieve a goal, solve a problem, be entertained, find out quality news or have a good laugh.
* Keep it fresh. For repeat visits, it is crucial to provide regular updates to the website, especially in frequently viewed zones. Add fresh content every few days if possible; at a minimum, weekly.
* Outsource article writing. If you hate the thought of generating content yourself, or your team is not writing-savvy, consider outsourcing this end of the task. Depending on the length, content, specialization and quality required, prices can start as low as US$ 5 per article. However, don’t neglect attempting to write your own work – who better than you knows your own business, hobby or club and can express precisely what needs to be said? Just sit down and start writing an article. You may be impressed when you’re done!
* Get a proofreader. Poor spelling and grammar reflect badly on the services and information being provided; avoid unwarranted negative judgments by getting the writing in order prior to publication online.
* Avoid content generators. While these were once the delight of a fledgling web industry, they are no longer useful. Putting your own team’s creativity online is what is useful.
* Never copy and paste from another website – Google, Yahoo, MSN and other search engines are too smart for this nowadays and will detect copied and unoriginal content, sending you to the bottom of the pile.
2. Improve your search engine ranking by focusing your content on keywords related to your topic. This is called search engine optimization and will help people find your website when they’re searching the Web. Make sure the keywords flow naturally with the text and when you are brainstorming for good words, ask around for words that come naturally to people of all ages when looking for your type of site. To help you understand better, realize that the keywords not only go into headings and page names but also into “meta tags”. “Meta tags” are the software code that website visitors do not see but search engines do. Finally, don’t overdo the keywords; over-stuffing keywords will result in a very low search ranking for your website. Also, be very careful not to place key text inside graphics; search engines cannot pick up graphics.
3. This is a very important part of website management. Exchange links. Trading links with other websites that are closely related to the subject of your website can bring you more website traffic. These are two-way links because you must provide a link to them, too, and linking to low-quality websites can threaten the credibility of yours. Only link to sites that are dead on topic, and truly help your visitors. Instead of trading links, you could also trade banner ads, half page ads, classified ads, etc.
4. Advertise your presence. Besides using links, you must make use of numerous other ways to increase web traffic. Sit down and write a list of all the ways you can think of to get your web address noticed and clicked on. For example:
* If you have money – consider pay per click. The big search engines like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft provide schemes. But find out first how to limit your expenditure to the level you want.
* Use e-zines. Make your own that relate to your website and form a regular reminder each issue for people to visit your website. Submit all the free e-zine directories on the internet.
* Submit your articles to e-zines, websites and writing sites that accept article submissions. Include your business information and web address at the end of the article. This is a good way to create one-way backlinks to your website. This is the most effective way to get listed on any search engine. Usually, the more relevant links you have pointing to your site the higher you will rank.
* Go beyond the electronic medium and into the print medium. Advertise in local newspapers, business brochures, magazines, nationwide publications and mail-drop literature. And don’t forget the perennial favorite, the good old Yellow Pages™ – printed version naturally!
* Small business cards left in cafés, on signboards, exchanged at meetings etc.
* Use local resources such as clubs, libraries and community centers for non-profit website awareness raising.
* Participate on message boards. Post answers to other people’s questions, ask questions and post appropriate information. Include your signature file containing your website’s URL at the end of all your postings.
* Start your own online discussion community. It could be an online message board, e-mail discussion list or chat room. When people get involved in your community, they will regularly return to communicate with others.
* Use word of mouth. Tell everyone you know about your website, give out business cards to passers-by in the street, and so on. You might even want to run a guerrilla marketing program!
* Use your car, especially if your website is area-specific (e.g. a website detailing local events or selling local services). Get some vinyl decals or bumper stickers created and turn your car into a moving advertisement, literally driving traffic to your web site!
5. Give freebies. Who doesn’t like a freebie?! Online freebies are commonplace and they leave the visitor wanting more when they are well written and informative introductory materials. Consider such freebies as:
* Giving away an eBook with your ad on it. Allow your visitors to also give the freebie away. This’ll increase your ad exposure and increase web traffic to your website at the same time;
* Holding free online classes or seminars. They could be held in your website’s chat room. The idea of “live” information will definitely entice people to visit your website. You will become known as an expert on the topic.
* Giving visitors a free entry into your contest or sweepstakes. The prizes should be something of interest or value to your visitors. Most people who enter will continually revisit your web site to get the results.
* Letting visitors download free software such as freeware, shareware, demos etc. You could even turn part of your site into a free software directory. If you created the software, include your ad inside and let other people give it away.
* Targeting specific groups who might worry about using the internet with free classes in using it on your site – senior citizens, busy workers etc. might find these convenient and alluring.
* Offering free online services or utilities from your website. For instance, they could be search engine submitting, copywriting proofreading etc. The service or utility should be helpful to your target audience.
* Giving free consulting to people who visit your website. You could offer your knowledge via e-mail or by telephone. People will consider this a huge value because consulting fees can be very expensive.
* Offering a free start-up package that has a finite time; enough time for the customer to practice with your online product and like it enough to pay for continued use.
* Sending out free CD-Roms, CDs, DVDs etc. that contain starter packs or teasers to encourage the customer to use your site more.
* Offering free screensavers or templates for business cards, cards, writing paper etc., anything that a customer can print out.
6. Be patient. Search engines need a lot of time to index a new website and domain. They need time to index all your content; it’s worth the wait and should be factored into your website profitability and/or popularity timeline. In the meantime, continue to add high quality content to your website and keep it up to date and relevant.
7. Use all of these free techniques to increase traffic to your website: USFreeads.net, twitter.com, drop flyers, chat rooms, forums, Youtube, Myspace and Google Groups.
Tips
* Start right here on wikiHow. Read up on how to publicize your website on wikiHow without breaking the rules. If you can provide quality content, you can create a win-win relationship where you share knowledge and get publicity in return.
Warnings
* Never, ever SPAM. Your credibility will be gone before you know it, and with it will go your traffic.
* Don’t get caught up with website generators and internet tricks. All these “black hat” tricks will only work temporarily. Your business needs to be set up for the long term.
* Do not be fooled by those traffic sellers promising thousands of hits an hour. What they really do is load up your URL in a program, along with a list of proxies. Then they run the program for a few hours. It looks like someone is on your site because your logs show visitors from thousands of different IPs. What happens in reality is your website is just pinged by the p

Cyberdust, Ruined, or Busted? Web Site Traffic is the Engine Necessary to Make Money Online
Web site traffic is the life blood of any web site and is critical to the success of any online business.
Without it you can’t make money online or generate leads. Targeted traffic is simply traffic from sources and locations that are relevant to your site. If you have looked into generating traffic, you have probably seen offers of 100,000 hits for or whatever.
Not too often will such tactics work. You really need to find your niche, develop a product that will interest them, and get into the environments where these prospects will be active online.
Web site traffic is becoming increasingly more expensive to develop. Regardless, it is still critical for a small online business to know where traffic is coming from and understand what people are doing when they visit their web site. Web site traffic is essential to having a thriving online business for the long haul.
Web site traffic x conversion = results (i.e. money)
Web Site Traffic is the life blood that determines whether or not your site makes money or lays dormant collecting dust, ruined, or busted. Without traffic, you have a pretty site you can show off to your mates and fellow entrepreneurs but not one that will put money in your pocket.
What if you do have a good site, a great product, a solid business plan already in place? Where exactly do you go to build consistent traffic to your web site?
BLOGGING
Web site traffic is partially generated by search engines and more web site traffic will be directed to and from blogs if the blog itself ranks highly. Blogs get much attention from Google and many other indexes hungry for new, user generated content.
Blogging has become a part of day-to-day life. People have taken to share their views and opinions and post their comments online. Blogs and RSS feeds go hand in hand. Since more people are into blogs, website owners are finding that this has become a valuable tool in getting website traffic. Regardless of the source, Web site traffic is a necessary condition for success in making money online.
ONLINE FORUMS
Forums are an excellent medium to get increased web site traffic. It’s simple to execute traffic building from forum. You simply ask a few questions you need answered, answer a few questions you have the answers for, or make comments about topics you have knowledge about. This is a simple formula as long as you don’t “spam” your postings. Keep you marketing speak out of your posts and leverage your signature line for your short marketing pitch.
Find forum owners with a lot of members that are discussing many issues related to your product or service. This is a good bet and effective starting point. You can get a good, broad distribution of your name, product, and knowledge without having the members feel you are spamming.
Forums are really meant to be conversations about certain topics. Inserting advertising into a topic such as issues facing our low carbon economy just doesn’t make sense. Keep on topic and you’ll be fine.
ORGANIC SEARCH ENGINE RANKING
Search engines are text based and dominated by content. The new computer algorithms are looking for repetition of keywords, relevant content, and combinations of statistical numbers for ranking purposes. There is no reason why writing for search engines should be incompatible with company objectives.
Search engines tend to look for particular Web page content construction when “spidering” and indexing Web sites. The absence of certain attributes, or the over-prevalence of keywords, can seriously impact your ability to achieve Web site listing and your subsequent ranking success. Keep your web site content on topic to your service offering and focused on the needs and wants of your target prospect.
If messaging is focused squarely on your prospect, your organic search rankings will benefit as a result.
ARTICLE MARKETING
Article marketing is a super and cost effective way to broadcast your message and knowledge around a certain particular. The articles typically contain a sample outline about a topic with a specific audience in mind. Case in point is this article itself. The general topic revolves around making money online through the effective use of traffic building tactics.
Often, the article reader will just skim the content in order to find something of interest – Making money online EQUALS lots of traffic PLUS many free sources of traffic like traffic exchanges PLUS effective marketing messages targeting to the needs of your prospects.
Article marketing is a strategy that involves writing articles that are optimized for certain keywords. Articles are often keyword driven with an emphasis towards the marketer’s area of knowledge or service offering. The keywords that you optimize your articles for should not have too many competing keywords, pages, and products thus enabling you to get quality position in the search engines.
Content is always the bait for visitors. The better and more useful the content, the more likely prospects will check out your resource box (hint, hint), and decide to jump over to your website. Content that does not help the reader, involve the reader, or help support your web offering is just going to be fluff and of little value.
TRAFFIC EXCHANGES
Free web site traffic is initially labor intensive when it comes to traffic exchanges but the investment of your online marketing efforts will bring you longer term success online. Online business owners who seek increased web site traffic hope that their web site is a favorite in the internet community. Recent surveys have indicated that the internet population now exceeds one billion people and web site marketers who crave a significant piece of that lofty figure are always searching for more visitors.
Online customers look for more than a name and number when they need goods or services. Use traffic exchanges as a method to provide free Internet advertising to show prospects your business information and services. Build up your reputation and your trust level with the surfing members and you won’t have any trouble generating traffic to your site.

Answer by Michael F There are a couple of methods you can use to attract advertisers to your site. The one that I’ve had the most success with however is the following:
1. Do a search for keywords related to your website on Google. Try to use the most competitive keywords which you can get from keyword related software or simply by looking at the number of competing pages listed in the upper right-hand corner of Google.
2. Start with the 4th search engine result and put the name of each website in a spreadsheet. I like to take from the #4 position to the #20 position.
3. Eliminate those URLs that are for ezine articles, blogs, etc. You are looking for company websites.
4. Email each website to let them know that you are in a top position for a very competitive keyword and can offer valuable exposure. Then, negotiate with each company – presenting your advertising opportunity.
5. Repeat this by analyzing pay per click results. I know this method is somewhat manual, but I have found some of my best paying advertisers using this method.
Targeted web site traffic is usually the focal point of a site that is selling products or offering certain services. Compared with mainstream traffic, targeted online traffic is made up of certain online users who are interested in what a particular Web site is offering. These users are also those who are likely to convert from being an online visitor to being a consumer. Simply put, these are the individuals or entities that will likely purchase what is being offered by a web site.
Where the traffic will come from
Online firms that offer targeted traffic services usually have a network of advertisers and other sites where traffic is high. When a Web master subscribes to such a service, the visitors from these networks (usually sites that are similar in focus to the Web master’s site) are redirected to the Web master’s site. The number of visitors that will be redirected will depend on the kind of package purchased by the owner of the site.
How targeted traffic services work
In some cases, providers of this service will use pop ups and banner ads to promote a web site. These ads will appear on certain sites, more commonly in pages that have similar focus with that of the buyer’s. Web site owners can also be required to provide certain keywords and categories. When these keywords are typed in by an online visitor, the site of the buyer will appear on the list. Whether on top or at 10th place will depend on the kind of package purchased by the site owner.
For others, category targeted traffic is more appropriate. If a site is selling a product, the owner of the site can choose the category or segment where his product falls under. The provider of the targeted traffic service will put in advertisements for the site owner on Web addresses that attract people who are likely to be interested in buying the product.
There is also targeted traffic categorized by location or country. This works by prompting an online visitor to identify where he is located or what country he is from before he can enter a particular site. If the location or country is among those listed by the site owner, then the advertisement for his website will appear on the page.
Targeted web site traffic is ideal for online businesses trying to sell products or services. A web master should take note, though, that this does not guarantee sales and profits. It is just a way of narrowing the consumer population and increasing one’s chances of getting the attention of prospective purchasers. The rest, of course, is up to the website owner.

Answer by answer Small Business Marketing Strategy: Target the up-and-coming search engines
While Google still rules the roost when it comes to Internet search engines, and Yahoo is firmly entrenched in second spot, a number of new start-ups are hoping to give them a run for their money. And a good small business marketing strategy would be to check them out and see how you can make them work for your site!
Some of the new up-and-comers include:
Powerset (www.powerset.com): A “natural language” search engine
Hakia (www.hakia.com): A “meaning-based” search engine
Wikia(www.wikia.com): A “community-based” search engine
ChaCha(www.chacha.com): A “social networking-based” search engine
Snap (www.snap.com): A search engine that offers visual previews
It’s a smart small business marketing strategy to continue optimizing for the Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines as they are by far and away the most popular — but niche search engines could provide new opportunities to reach your market. Be sure to check them out!
